Taylor Russell McKenzie was conceived in Vancouver, British Columbia on July 18th, 1994. She was also raised in Toronto, Vancouver, and Montreal. [1][2] Russell, who was born to the black father and white mother, is biracial, and was raised mostly on her mother's family. Russell recalled how as a child she was rejected by her peers because of the color of her skin. The family was struggling financially and were forced to move sixteen times in order to take on her father's work. In spite of this, Russell mentioned how in her early days "there was always a chance for reinvention, to create something new."As as a young person, Russell was already artistically inclined. At first, she would like to pursue a career in ballet. She later wanted to become a painter. Russell was 18 when she began her first acting class. She saved the money from work to buy an automobile and drove to Los Angeles to audition. Once her savings ran out she would go back to work until she had enough money to make another attempt at auditioning. The process continued for four consecutive years, until she was finally offered her first television show role.
